In 2001, Dan Johnson founded Swim Inc. in Sarasota, Florida. He was not simply a pool contractor. He was a Certified Building Professional who thought rigorously about how pools should work at the engineering level. The result: Dan authored ANSI/APSP-5, the national standard that defines how residential pools must be built. Every pool contractor in the country builds to his standards today.
His lifetime of contributions earned him the APSP Fellow designation, the industry’s highest individual honor, reserved for careers that change the profession. He was named FSPA Person of the Year, Certified Building Professional of the Year, and won the Aqua Magazine First Place award for custom pool design. The Aurora Award and APSP Silver Medal followed.
A personal moment changed how Swim Inc. builds every pool. When Dan’s granddaughter was involved in a near-drowning incident, he did not make a minor safety adjustment. He rethought the fundamental architecture of how pools circulate water. The result was the Swim-Safe Circulation System, built into every Swim Inc. pool since. That moment is also the founding philosophy of the company: build to a standard no code requires, because that is what the work demands.
